My Initial Thoughts

With each passing year, the television market has become more competitive. Three major brands have been dominating the TV market with their names being Sony, LG, and Samsung. That has changed, however, with the arrival of other brands that fill in the gaps left by the major names. Other brands include Westinghouse, which isn’t particularly popular for making televisions but makes outstanding TVs like the Westinghouse WR40FX2019. The Westinghouse WR40FX2019 is an affordable smart television with ROKU TV OS, which has access to tons of streaming services. Additionally, this television boasts a really good sound quality and features. However, would the Westinghouse WR40FX2019 be able to compete against other TVs from brands like Sony or LG? Well, that’s what you are about to find out in the remainder of this article.

Westinghouse WR40FX2019 Design, Dimension & Weight Review

In terms of design, the Westinghouse WR40FX2019 looks very much like a TCL ROKU television. Probably they look so alike because they are both ROKU smart televisions – they use the ROKU smart TV operating system. Basically, the Westinghouse WR40FX2019 has this basic yet appealing design. This television features not-so-thick bezels that border its display screen. In addition to that, these bezels are made out of plastic and have a glossy finish. Moreover, the bottom bezel of the Westinghouse WR40FX2019 features a “Westinghouse” logo in the center. Additionally, there is also a “ROKU” logo on the right edge of the bottom bezel, like most TCL ROKU televisions. Moving on, the Westinghouse WR40FX2019 comes with a pair of legs. These legs aren’t exactly like the V-shaped legs which most televisions have. To be more specific, these legs are pretty much like a horizontal bracket “(“. However, the legs are very close to the television’s edges. As a result, you will need a fairly large table or surface to place the Westinghouse WR40FX2019 if not wall-mounted. When I hinted earlier that the Westinghouse WR40FX2019 looks similar to a TCL ROKU television, I wasn’t joking. Looking at the Westinghouse WR40FX2019 from the back, it’s like you are looking at a TCL ROKU television’s back. Specifically, the lower part of the Westinghouse WR40FX2019’s back is thicker than the upper part. This is because the lower part of the back houses all of the television’s components and ports. Additionally, the lower part of the television’s back is made of plastic while the upper part is metal. However, because the lower part of the television’s back is thick, the Westinghouse WR40FX2019 may slightly bulge out from the wall if wall-mounted. That’s said, now let’s look into the dimension and weight of the television. Specifically, the Westinghouse WR40FX2019 has a dimension of 900.9 x 63.7 x 523.7 mm and weighs 6196 g. As I’ve said several times before, the Westinghouse WR40FX2019 looks a lot like a TCL ROKU television. I suppose comparing the dimensions and weight of the Westinghouse WR40FX2019 to that of a TCL ROKU television makes sense. Specifically, I will be comparing the Westinghouse WR40FX2019 to the TCL 40FS3800. The TCL 40FS3800 measures 991.8 x 96.5 x 520.7 mm and weighs 7057.8 g. Therefore, the TCL 43S425 is larger and heavier than the Westinghouse WR40FX2019. In summary, the Westinghouse WR40FX2019 boasts a pleasant design. Additionally, the television’s design makes it a suitable alternative for a TCL ROKU television. Therefore, I will rate the Westinghouse WR40FX2019 an eight in this design review section.

Westinghouse WR40FX2019 Display Features Review

The Westinghouse WR40FX2019 comes with a 40-inch DLED display screen. A DLED display, which is also known as a Direct View LED display, is a type of LED display that uses thousands of diodes (LEDs). These diodes are directly mounted on the display, with no usage of either polarized glass or crystal. Moving on, this 40-inch DLED display features an FHD (1920 x 1080) resolution. As a display with FHD resolution, the Westinghouse WR40FX2019’s display should be able to deliver crisp, colorful, and clear images. Furthermore, the Westinghouse WR40FX2019’s display comes with an aspect ratio of 16:9, as expected. I said “as expected” because most televisions nowadays come with an aspect ratio of 16:9. Therefore, since the Westinghouse WR40FX2019 is only 2 years old (as of 2021, when I wrote this review), one would expect it to come with a 16:9 aspect ratio. However, what does an aspect ratio actually mean? You are about to find out. An aspect ratio is a proportion/ratio between a display’s width and height. Additionally, an aspect ratio has two numbers divided by a colon. For example, the Westinghouse WR40FX2019’s display’s aspect ratio is “16:9”. The first number before the colon represents the display’s width, while the second number after the colon represents its height. Unfortunately, the Westinghouse WR40FX2019 comes with a disappointing contrast ratio. To be more precise, this display has a contrast ratio of 950:1. The contrast ratio of a display is expressed as the ratio of the display’s brightest white to the deepest black. Moreover, the contrast ratio of a display determines the display’s black level. Therefore, with such a mediocre contrast ratio, the Westinghouse WR40FX2019’s display won’t be able to produce deep black. To put it in other words, blacks on the TV’s display will look more like gray. As a result, people who love watching movies with plenty of dark scenes may not prefer the Westinghouse WR40FX2019. If you want a television similar to the Westinghouse WR40FX2019 with a better contrast ratio, you can check out the TCL 40FS3800. Furthermore, the Westinghouse WR40FX2019’s display doesn’t support HDR (High Dynamic Range). Not only that, but the Westinghouse WR40FX2019’s display also doesn’t support local dimming features. Moreover, this is really a bad thing because these features enhance a display’s contrast ratio and overall picture quality. On a positive note, the Westinghouse WR40FX2019’s display has outstanding viewing angles. As a result, the picture quality will remain constant even when viewing the Westinghouse WR40FX2019 from the side. Therefore, making the TV ideal for a large room setting. Another positive thing about the Westinghouse WR40FX2019’s display is its reflection handling. This display has a semi-gloss finish that decreases reflections on the display. Therefore, the Westinghouse WR40FX2019 can be used in a moderately-lit area. However, in a very bright area, the Westinghouse WR40FX2019’s display’s semi-gloss finish might struggle to retract reflection. Speaking of brightness, the Westinghouse WR40FX2019’s display can get decently bright. Specifically, the display has a maximum brightness of 250 cd/m2. Moving on, this TV’s display has a refresh rate of 120 Hz. Hence, the Westinghouse WR40FX2019 is an ideal television for playing video games. What does refresh rate mean, though? Refresh rate is the time per second a display is able to refresh a new image. However, the display’s refresh rate isn’t the only reason why the Westinghouse WR40FX2019 is suitable for gaming. Specifically, the Westinghouse WR40FX2019’s display also has an impressively low response time of 8.5 milliseconds. Response time is the time it takes a display to convert from a particular color to another color. Additionally, the lower the response time, the better the gaming experience. In conclusion, the Westinghouse WR40FX2019’s display is adequate for casual viewing, but it is nothing special. The display doesn’t support HDR or local dimming features. Also, it has a bad contrast ratio. Therefore, the Westinghouse WR40FX2019 deserves nothing more than a 7 out of ten rating in this review section.

Westinghouse WR40FX2019 Sound Features Review

For the sound department, the Westinghouse WR40FX2019 employs a pair of 10W down-firing speakers. Performance-wise, these speakers produce impressive sound quality and are decently loud. Additionally, considering the Westinghouse WR40FX2019’s price, it featuring such impressive speakers is a huge win. However, the bass performance of these speakers is subpar. Therefore, watching bass-heavy movies or music on the Westinghouse WR40FX2019 is a “no-no.” Moving on, the distortion performance of the Westinghouse WR40FX2019’s speakers is pretty decent. As long as you don’t increase the television to the maximum volume level, you are good to go. Apart from the outstanding speakers, the Westinghouse WR40FX2019 also comes with some impressive sound features, such as Dolby Audio. Basically, Dolby Audio is an audio compression technology. Dolby Audio compresses sound from movie soundtracks – which is designed for cinema-style speakers or loudspeakers – for a better audio/viewing experience at home. Impressively, Dolby Audio does this without compromising the sound quality of the television’s speakers. Moreover, with the help of this Dolby Audio, the Westinghouse WR40FX2019 will be able to provide crystal-clear sound with impressive dialogue. Additionally, Dolby Audio enhances the loudness of the television speakers for an ideal audio mix. In summary, the inclusion of Dolby Audio makes the Westinghouse WR40FX2019 stand out among its competitors. Additionally, even though the television’s speakers lack bass, they produce high-quality sound and clear dialogue. Therefore, I strongly believe the Westinghouse WR40FX2019 deserves a rating of nine in this sound features review section.

Westinghouse WR40FX2019 Ports & Connectivity Features Review

The Westinghouse WR40FX2019’s connection ports are neatly located on the lower part of its back. On the television’s back, you will find three HDMI ports, a USB port, Optical Out, and one composite audio/video input. Unfortunately, the Westinghouse WR40FX2019 doesn’t have an Ethernet port, as well as Bluetooth. On the plus side, the television comes with an in-built Dual-band Wi-Fi (MIMO) for wireless internet connectivity. Moving on, as one would expect, the Westinghouse WR40FX2019 comes with remote control. Specifically, this remote control isn’t like a typical remote control; it is actually a ROKU TV remote. This remote control has a small stature with curve edges and a black finish. However, the buttons on this remote control are rather limited due to the remote’s small size. To be more specific, the remote control doesn’t feature a number pad. On a positive note, the remote feature dedicated buttons for quick access to four major streaming apps. These streaming apps include Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV+, and HULU. Furthermore, the volume rockers and mute buttons on this remote control are on the right side.   In addition to that, the remote has a plus-shaped navigation button that has a blue color. Also, on the bottom of the remote, there is a “Westinghouse” logo and a “ROKU TV” logo. Furthermore, in case you misplace this remote control, you can also control the Westinghouse WR40FX2019 with the ROKU app on your smartphone. You can either download the ROKU app from the Google Play Store for Android phones or App Store for iPhones. In summary, the port selection on the Westinghouse WR40FX2019 isn’t particularly great. However, it features most of the essential ports, with the exception of an HDMI port.   Hence, I will rate the Westinghouse WR40FX2019 a seven out of ten in this port and connectivity review section.

Westinghouse WR40FX2019 Smart Features Review

As a smart television, one would expect the Westinghouse WR40FX2019 to feature a smart TV operating system. Well, the Westinghouse WR40FX2019 employs the popular ROKU TV operating system. This ROKU TV OS gives you access to over 100,000 movies and TV shows from top free and paid streaming apps. Major paid streaming apps on this OS are HULU, Netflix, Apple TV+, Disney+, HBO, and so many more. Free streaming app, on the other hand, includes ROKU’s very own ROKU channel, PBS, CW, Tubi, and so on. The ROKU TV OS not only offers plenty of streaming apps but also offers an easy-to-use, user-friendly interface.   The ROKU TV OS’s interface is nice, has minimal lag, and the animation is smooth. Furthermore, the Westinghouse WR40FX2019 also supports Apple Airplay. Therefore, you should be able to stream movies from your Apple devices to the television. Additionally, you can also “cast” videos, music, or photos from your smartphone to the TV using the free ROKU App. In conclusion, ROKU TV OS once again proves why most TV manufacturers love working with it. The OS has an outstanding interface and access to lots of TV shows and movies. Therefore, I will be rating the Westinghouse WR40FX2019 a nine for employing the brilliant ROKU TV operating system.

My Final Thoughts

The Westinghouse WR40FX2019 is a budget-friendly DLED smart TV that delivers a decent entertainment experience. This television has outstanding speakers that generate fairly rich sounds and clear dialogue. In addition to that, the Westinghouse WR40FX2019 also features Dolby Audio to enhance its sound production. However, the television’s LED display has a poor contrast ratio and average picture quality overall. Also, the Westinghouse WR40FX2019 lacks an Ethernet port. However, the television compensates for these flaws by featuring the brilliant ROKU TV operating system. I hope you found this Westinghouse WR40FX2019 review helpful.
