Just so you know, these ratings will be presented at the end of each section of this review article. Thus, when you are done reading this review, you should have enough information about the Philips 65 Inch 4K TV.

My Initial Thoughts

Since the release of its first 4K television in 2013, Philips has gained a little bit of popularity in the television market. Moreover, the brand doesn’t produce “anyhow” 4K televisions, but 4K televisions with excellent performance. One of such television is the Philips 65 Inch 4K TV that was released in 2020. This television comes with an excellent 4K display that supports HDR and has a unique feature called Ambilight. However, does this television has enough features to compete with other TVs from other brands in the market? This review article contains the answers to that question and more. Hence, to find out, simply read this review article to the end.

Philips 65 Inch 4K TV Design, Dimension, and Weight Review

Starting off, the Philips 65 Inch 4K TV comes with a unique design style that is very sleek. To give more details, the television features slim plastic bezels with a silver finish that surrounds its display screen. Even though any side of the bezels doesn’t carry the brand’s logo, the silver finish makes them look really attractive. As a matter of fact, the bezels are capable of grabbing your attention at first sight – that’s how unique and good-looking they are! That said, just like the bezels, the back panel of this television is also made of plastic. However, unlike the silver finish of the bezels, this television’s back panel features a matte-black finish. Apart from the matte-black finish, the Philips 65 Inch 4K TV’s plastic back panel also has four 400 x 200 VESA holes for wall-mounting the TV. However, because the television is quite thick and bulky, it will bulge out and look awkward when wall-mounted. Speaking of bulkiness, this Phillips television measures 1459 x 86.4 x 850 mm (W x D x H). Asides from being significantly bulky and thick, this television is also heavy – it weighs a massive 27000 g. In fact, compared to most 65-inch televisions, the Philips 65 Inch 4K TV is bulkier and heavier. For example, the VIZIO V655 weighs 20400 g and measures 1457.1 x 61.2 x 840.7 mm (W x D x H). On a positive note, the Philips 65 Inch 4K TV features a cable management system on its back panel. Besides, the television comes with two metal T-shaped legs with a silver finish. Due to their metal build, these legs are very sturdy and offer enough support for the television to stand well. However, the legs are quite short, thereby limiting the space underneath the television for placing a soundbar. Nevertheless, unlike most televisions nowadays, the Philips 65 Inch 4K TV’s legs are not positioned close to the edges. Thus, you might be needing a fairly large table to place the television on if not wall-mounted. In conclusion, the Philips 65 Inch 4K TV features a unique and attractive design. However, this television is quite bulky and heavy. As a result, I will offer the Philips 65 Inch 4K TV a rating of eight out of ten in this design features review section.

Philips 65 Inch 4K TV Display Features and Picture Quality Review

For the display, the Philips 65 Inch 4K TV employs a 65-inch LED display with 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) resolution. In case you didn’t know, 4K UHD resolution is now the new normal in the television market today. This is because it allows a display to produce sharp, colorful, and lifelike images. Hence, as a 4K UHD display, this television’s 65-inch display should be able to render realistic picture quality. Besides, the display should also offer better and sharper picture quality than a standard HD resolution display. This is due to the fact that 4K UHD resolution has approximately four times the number of pixels that HD resolution features. That aside, apart from its 4K UHD resolution, the Philips 65 Inch 4K TV’s 65-inch LED display comes with an IPS (In-Plan Switching) panel. Thanks to this IPS panel, the display offers wide viewing angles. Thus, pictures and colors shouldn’t lose quality or accuracy when viewers are watching the television from the sides or off-center. As a result, this Philips television is good for a large room setting. However, IPS panel displays are known to have one defect which is a poor contrast ratio. Unfortunately, the Philips 65 Inch 4K TV’s display isn’t an exception as it features a contrast ratio that is below 3000:1. Due to this, the display won’t be able to produce deep/rich blacks. Basically, blacks rendered by the display will tend to look grayish. Therefore, the Philips 65 Inch 4K TV might not be ideal for watching content with lots of dark scenes such as horror movies. Also, the television isn’t good for dark room viewing because of its poor contrast ratio. For the record, contrast ratio is the difference between the brightest whites and darkest blacks of a display. Apart from its poor contrast ratio, the brightness of the television’s display is also nothing to write home about. To be more precise, the display offers a disappointing maximum brightness of 112 nits. As a result, the Philips 65 Inch 4K TV won’t be good for usage in bright areas or outdoors. Nevertheless, the surface of the television’s display features a glossy coating that helps with reflection handling. Therefore, using the television outdoors should be less bothersome. That aside, the Philips 65 Inch 4K TV supports various HDR (High Dynamic Range) formats which are Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and HLG (Hybrid-Log Gamma). In brief, HDR is a picture-enhancement technology that improves the picture quality and brightness of a display when rendering HDR-supported content. Practically, when the Philips 65 Inch 4K TV is rendering such content, images are going to look more realistic and lifelike. Just so you know, HDR-supported content is mostly found on streaming apps such as Netflix. Moving on, the Philips 65 Inch 4K TV’s display comes with a unique technology called Ambilight which is also known as Ambient Lighting. This technology was invented by Philips Research in Eindhoven in 2002. Furthermore, it produces light effects that correspond to the video content on the television’s display. Thereby reducing backlight bleed and eye strain as well as offering an immersive viewing experience with more picture details. That said, the Philips 65 Inch 4K TV’s display has a refresh rate of 60 Hz. Briefly, refresh rate is the amount of time per second a display can draw a new image. For example, this television’s display’s 60 Hz refresh rate means it draws a new image 60 times every second. Thus, the higher the refresh rate, the lesser the blur trails and the better the motion handling of the display. Hence, with a decent 60 Hz refresh rate, there should be minimal blur trails when the Philips 65 Inch 4K TV’s display is rendering fast-motion content. Also, due to its display’s refresh rate, the television should be okay for casual gaming. However, the motion handling performance of the display would be better if it had a higher refresh rate like 120 Hz and 240 Hz. All in all, I will rate the Philips 65 Inch 4K TV an eight out of ten in this display features review section.

Philips 65 Inch 4K TV Sound Features Review

The sound performance of a television is just as vital as its display performance. On that note, the Philips 65 Inch 4K TV comes with a pair of 10-watts speakers that deliver decent sound quality. Moreover, the speakers are capable of producing clear and audible dialogue. For your information, dialogue refers to the conversation between two or more characters in a movie or TV show. However, even though these speakers can produce clear dialogue, they are not loud enough to fill a large room with sound. To make matters worse, the television lacks a built-in subwoofer for adequate bass production. As a result, bass-heavy movies might not be ideal to watch on the Philips 65 Inch 4K TV. Nevertheless, if you really love bass-heavy movies or songs, you can consider buying a soundbar alongside the television. Apparently, that would attract additional costs. Looking on the brighter side of things, the Philips 65 Inch 4K TV features Dolby Atmos. Dolby Atmos is a sound processing technology that enhances the loudness and surround sound production of a sound system. Therefore, with Dolby Atmos, the Philips 65 Inch 4K TV’s speakers should be able to produce a theatre-like and immersive sound quality. Also, thanks to Dolby Atmos, the television’s speakers generate minimal distortion even at the maximum volume level. In case you don’t know, distortion in this context is the alteration of a sound system’s original audio frequencies. Thereby making the sound system produce unwanted noises. All things considered, I will rate the Philips 65 Inch 4K TV an eight out of ten in this sound features review section.

Philips 65 Inch 4K TV Ports and Connectivity Features Review

In terms of port, the Philips 65 Inch 4K TV is excellent. Basically, the television comes with a good amount of functional ports. To give more details, the ports are divided into two parts on the television’s back panel. Particularly, some ports are left-facing while others are down-facing. Starting with the left-facing ports, they include a common interface port, a USB port, an HDMI port, and a headphone jack. Meanwhile, the down-facing ports include two more HDMI ports, another USB port, an Ethernet port, an RF port, and digital audio out. Before proceeding, it is worth mentioning that all the HDMI ports that this television has support ARC (Audio Return Channel). Hence, with any of the HDMI ports, users should be able to easily connect a soundbar to the Philips 65 Inch 4K TV. For wireless connectivity, the Philips 65 Inch 4K TV comes with an in-built 802.11n (2 x 2) WIFI. However, it doesn’t support Bluetooth. Moving on, as one would expect, this Philips television comes with remote control. Design-wise, this remote is quite small, has a plastic body, and features a gray finish. Impressively, despite its small stature, this television’s remote comes with lots of buttons, including a full number pad. In addition to the full number pad, the remote also features vertical volume and channel rockers. That’s not all; the remote has dedicated buttons that allow for quick access to Netflix, Rakuten TV, and the Ambilight feature. Additionally, it has a plus-shaped navigation button at the center. In conclusion, apart from its lack of Bluetooth, the Philips 65 Inch 4K TV is actually flawless in terms of connectivity and inputs. Hence, I will rate the television a nine out of ten in this ports and connectivity features review section.

Philips 65 Inch 4K TV Smart Features Review

For the smart feature, the Philips 65 Inch 4K TV comes with the Saphi operating system. To give more details, this OS is exclusive to Philips smart televisions and has an easy-to-use user interface. Asides from its easy-to-use user interface, this operating system also offers quite a number of pre-installed streaming services and applications. A few of the streaming services and apps that you will find on this OS include YouTube, Netflix, Rakuten TV, and Prime Video. Impressively, if the pre-installed streaming services don’t satisfy your needs, this Philips television has a screen mirroring feature. Thanks to this feature, users should be able to share/cast content directly from their smart devices to the television. To crown it all up, the Philips 65 Inch 4K TV’s Saphi OS has a built-in browser and an online video store. Sadly, this operating system suffers from annoying ads that cannot be disabled. All in all, I will offer the Philips 65 Inch 4K TV a rating of eight out of ten in this smart features review section.

My Final Thoughts

The Philips 65 Inch 4K TV is a smart television that offers excellent features and performance. To give more details, the TV comes with a unique feature called Ambilight and also supports HDR. That’s not all; this Philips television also offers a good number of ports and wide viewing angles. However, it lacks Bluetooth, and its operating system suffers from annoying ads. Also, this television is quite bulky and heavy. Nevertheless, if you can overlook these downsides, the Philips 65 Inch 4K TV is worth considering.
